Physical laws and the fundamental constants they employ result in the material conditions on earth. Life appears to have arisen on earth almost as soon as conditions favourable to it arose. It is everywhere, in almost every imaginable niche. Substantially new forms of life do not appear to have developed by gradual change, but appear at once, more or less fully developed, in the fossil record. Life has survived multiple mass extinction events, and rebounded with a host of new species. |
QO has a simple explanation for the fine-tuning of our universe: the QO multiverse. In this explanation, in the formative stage of our universe all possible universes were virtually present as a superposition of values. From these, a universe capable of supporting life was selected to become real, by means of natural purpose. The other possible universes thereby ceased to exist at all.
The natural purpose 'life' did not just happen to be applied. From the very beginning, the universe was and is biased toward steadily increasing complexity, and there is nothing more complex than life. Natural purpose works according to the principle that one value out of a superposition will be selected and made real when it represents a whole that is greater than the sum of the parts.

Credibility: This explanation simply applies the 'natural purpose' explanation, which is foundationally credible. It competes with two other explanations. The first, namely that the universe came to be capable of supporting life by a stupendous fluke. However, the odds of this happening are so vanishingly small that is acceptable only if there are no other explanations at all. The second is that there are really a stupendous number of universes, and that we happen to live in one that supports life. No universe incapable of supporting life will ever be observed. This explanation involves a gap, because it has no idea as to how natural law and fundamental constants can come to exist and vary. That makes the QO multiverse explanation foundationally credible. |
